Welcome to the watermelon movement. Not Just Another Watermelon!.

Since 1967, the watermelon has been a symbol of the Palestinian people.

The public display of the Palestinian flag was banned following the Six-Day War, and for a time was deemed a criminal offence.
In an infamous encounter, when an art exhibition was shut down by Israeli officials in 1980, artists were told that not only was the flag a forbidden symbol, its colours were as well.

One of the exhibition’s artists, Issam Badrl then asked, “What if I were to make a flower of red, green, black and white?” To which the reply was that such art would be confiscated – “Even if you paint a watermelon”.

And so the watermelon was born as a symbol of resistance, for its natural portrayal of the colours of the Palestinian flag; red, green, black and white.

The “Not Just a Watermelon” Campaign aims to raise global awareness of the genocide of the
Palestinian people.
We seek to educate the public to understand the crimes against humanity currently being inflicted on
the Palestinian people, as well as the numerous violations of their human rights and basic human
dignity which has spanned decades.
We also appeal to the public to call on their respective governments to end the genocide and to
hold the state of Israel accountable.

What is Genocide ?

The term genocide was coined in 1944 by Raphael Lemkin, a Polish-Jewish lawyer.
Lemkin explained the term by stating “The term does not necessarily signify mass killings…
Genocide refers to a coordinated plan aimed at destruction of the essential foundations of the life of
national groups so that these groups wither and die like plants that have suffered a blight.”

According to Article II of the Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of
Genocide:

“In the present Convention, genocide means any of the following acts committed with intent to
destroy, in whole or in part, a national, ethnical, racial or religious group, as such:

1. Killing members of the group;
2. Causing serious bodily or mental harm to members of the group;
3. Deliberately inflicting on the group conditions of life calculated to bring about its physical
destruction in whole or in part;
4. Imposing measures intended to prevent births within the group;
5. Forcibly transferring children of the group to another group.

According to respected sources…

Many respected human rights organisations, genocide scholars, and human rights advocates have
argued that Israel’s treatment of Palestinians violates a multitude of human rights protections set out
in international human rights law, and amounts to genocide.

• “Amnesty International’s report demonstrates that Israel has carried out acts prohibited under the
Genocide Convention, with the specific intent to destroy Palestinians in Gaza. These acts include
killings, causing serious bodily or mental harm and deliberately inflicting on Palestinians in Gaza
conditions of life calculated to bring about their physical destruction. Month after month, Israel has
treated Palestinians in Gaza as a subhuman group unworthy of human rights and dignity,
demonstrating its intent to physically destroy them,”
– Agnès Callamard, Secretary General of Amnesty International.

• “Israeli authorities have intentionally deprived Palestinian civilians in Gaza of adequate access to
water since October 2023, most likely resulting in thousands of deaths and thus committing the
crime against humanity of extermination and acts of genocide”
– Human Rights Watch

• “Since the beginning of the war, Israeli officials have publicly supported policies that strip
Palestinians of the very necessities required to sustain life — food, water, and fuel,”
– United Nations Special Committee.

• “Israel has committed genocidal acts, namely killing, seriously harming, and inflicting conditions of
life calculated, and intended to, bring about the physical destruction of Palestinians in Gaza,”
– University Network for Human Rights (UNHR)

• “Israel’s genocidal acts in Gaza have been motivated by the requisite genocidal intent, as
evidenced in this report by the statements of Israeli leaders, the character of the State and its
military forces’ conduct against and relating to Palestinians in Gaza, and the direct nexus between
them.”
– University Network for Human Rights (UNHR)

• “There was actually a systematic attempt to make Gaza uninhabitable, as well as to destroy all
institutions that make it possible for a group to sustain itself, not only physically but also culturally,”
– Omer Bartov, Israeli-American scholar, professor of Holocaust and genocide studies at Brown
University.

• “What is happening in Gaza is a genocide because Gaza does not exist anymore”
– Amos Goldberg, Israeli historian and genocide scholar
• “The Strip now is a wasteland of rubble and human remains”
– Dr. Tlaleng Mofokeng, UN Special Rapporteur on the Right to Health
